Unable to Mount Exchange 2010 Database on Hyper-V Guest

by Mike Pfeiffer on May 2, 2010

I recently ran into an issue with an Exchange 2010 mailbox server that would not mount any databases. I was receiving the following error when attempting to mount the databases using the Mount-Database cmdlet:

Couldn't mount the database that you specified. Specified database: DB1; Error code: An Active Manager operation failed with a transient error. Please retry the operation. Error: A transient error occurred during discovery of the database availability group topology. Error: Database action failed with transient error. Error: A transient error occurred during a database operation. Error: MapiExceptionJetErrorOutOfMemory: Unable to mount database.

This particular server was running as a Hyper-V guest, in addition to several other mailbox servers. After comparing the settings of the virtual machine to the other servers, I noticed that the memory had been incorrectly set on the server to 4098 MB.

I reset the memory to the correct value of 4096 MB and rebooted the server.

After restarting the server with the correct memory setting the databases automatically mounted and all was well. It's also worth mentioning that I was running RU2 on this server and upgraded to RU3 just too see if that would make a difference, but it did not.

This is not only a hyper-v problem. We hade exactly the same problem running exchange 2010 in wmvare with 4032 MB memory.

what would be the next highest memory setting that could be used? I’ve tried 128MB increments, the first 128MB over 4096 didnt work either..

I’ve bumped it up from 4096MB using 512MB and 1GB increments…no problems.
